PHILADELPHIA – Hugh Davio said the Boys’ Philly Showcase Camp held last week at St. Joseph’s University provided his greatest learning experience.

“I’ve been to a few prospect camps, but this one really taught me more about the D1 lacrosse experience with the classroom sessions,” said Davio, a 2017 defenseman from Summit (OR). “I learned how there is no letting up with the pace of play here, which is something we focus on with my club team, Rhino, in order to compete with players out here.”
Davio was one of 116 players from around the United States that competed at the first of three Showcase Camps being run this summer by NXT’s Showcase Lacrosse. He was picked to compete in the Fab 40 All-Star Game Thursday in Day 2 of the three-day event.
The Philly Showcase Camps have many features, including box infusion from US Box Lacrosse, college-style practices, a recruiting seminar, speed training workouts, leadership sessions and exposure to the multiple facets and disciplines of a Division I student-athlete.

Davio also answered these questions about the camp.
How did you adjust tot he competition at the event?
Davio: “Well, playing for Rhino and West Coast Starz really prepared me to play with this caliber of players, so I felt I was pretty prepared for this level of competition when I came out. I also really like the challenge of playing with the best competition, because I think it brings the best out of everyone, including myself.”
What did you learn from the box training?
Davio: “I learned how important moving the ball fast and always keeping your head up can be when playing in such a confined place.
“The camp was really fun and a great experience. I liked how the coaches worked with us daily and were so giving with their time.”
What was it like to compete with and against a lot of East Coast players?
Davio: “The athletes are really great out East, but I feel like the separation in skill level between East and West coast players is becoming less noticeable. The competition out East is very exceptional, though.”

What did you learn from the camp?
Copeland: “During the camp I learned various ways to improve my stick skills and on/off ball movement. It was great to play with such high competition.”
How did you adjust to the competition (in All-Star Game, and rest of camp)?
Copeland: “I just continued to played my game and to make sure I included my teammates around me. I had to pick up intensity for the all-star game due to more challenging competition.”
What did you learn from the box training?
Copeland: “The box training showed me the importance of the two-man game in lacrosse and various ways to get open with the use of on/off ball screens.”
What was it like to compete with and against a lot of East Coast players?
Copeland: “It was great to play with a lot of the East Coast players. I got to meet a lot of kids that I have recently played against in tournaments.”

What did you learn from the camp?
Robinson: “I learned, on the offensive side of the ball when I’m setting my dodges up, to get as high as possible so I will be able to get a full running start at my defender. This makes it easier to run by him and get off a clean shot.”
How did you adjust to the competition (in All-Star Game, and rest of camp)?
Robinson: “The All-Star Game is full of very good players who don’t make many mistakes so you have to be thoughtful with your plays and aggressive with your movements.”
What did you learn from the box training?
Robinson: “The box session was one of my favorite parts of the camp. It forces every player to think and react quickly. I learned that keeping your stick in a ‘triple threat’ position is a must in box lacrosse because it allows you to be able to pass, shoot, or dodge.”
What was it like to compete with and against a lot of East Coast players?
Robinson: “Most East Coast players have been playing for a long time and competing at a high level. Tennessee is filled with a lot of strong athletes that are looking to improve their skills. It is fun to be able to compete with the East Coast players who have a high lacrosse IQ.”
