From Press Release

The top U19 boys and U17 girls lacrosse players from the USA and Canada will unite in Jacksonville, Florida later this month for the Brogden Cup, a historic three-day lacrosse series organized by LEGACY Global Sports that promotes international fellowship through the sport of lacrosse between the two countries.

The competition will be held December 27-29 at Jacksonville University.

Players representing the United States have qualified for selection by competing in the USSSA National Lacrosse Classic this past summer. The U19 boys’ team is comprised of players from NLC champion Rochester.

Representing Canada in the Brogden Cup is Team Ontario, a provincial team featuring the top players selected from tryouts conducted by the Ontario Lacrosse Association. It is naturally a much-anticipated event for Canadian lacrosse enthusiasts. “Any time the US and Canada play lacrosse, the games are competitive,” said Stan Cockerton, a US and Canadian Hall of Fame inductee and Past President of the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL). “I would not expect anything different this year.”

U15 boys from Canada and the United States will play a friendly competition in conjunction with the Brogden Cup. Local players from the State of Florida will also play exhibition games against teams from the United States and Canada.

Virginia commit Payton Cormier collected four goals and two assists – giving him 10 goals in two games – as Team Ontario (Canada) defeated Rochester (Team USA), 13-10, today to wrap up the U19 championship at The Brogden Cup at Jacksonville University.

DJ Batton (Apex, North Carolina) is interviewed after scoring six goals and the game-winner in the U15 clincher

Jonathon Peshko (Johns Hopkins commit) added three goals for Canada, which outscored Team USA, 5-2, in the final period. Brett Dobson (Hill Academy, Stony Brook commit) posted 12 saves for the win and Josh Dawick (Denver commit) added two goals and two assists.

For Team USA, Ian Evans (LaFayette High, NY) had three goals and an assist and Alexander Reimer (Lancaster High, NY) scored three goals while Phillip Barilla (Irondequoit) had two goals and two assists.

In the U15 game, Team USA (Carolina) moved to 2-0 and claimed the title with a 10-9 come-from-behind win in overtime as 2021 DJ Batton (Apex High/Team91 Carolina, N.C.) had six goals, including the game-winner. Team USA erased an 8-2 deficit, outscoring Canada, 8-1, after halftime. Ryan Quick and Jackson Weber led Canada with two goals apiece.

DJ Batton was confident his U15 Team USA would be successful at the Brogden Cup this week.

“Coming into this week the only games we had played together were at the National Lacrosse Classic, but I think that one week really helped us get to know each other,” said Batton. a 2021 attackman from Apex High, N.C.. “That definitely showed on the field. Coming into this week we all knew we were going to play as a team and win all four of our games.”

Batton’s prediction was correct. Team USA, comprised of the Middle School Academy championship team, Carolina, from the summer’s National Lacrosse Classic, scored a sweep of Team Canada (Ontario) and a fourth win against a Florida All-Star squad in the Brogden Cup, held at Jacksonville University.

Team USA finished the event with this morning’s 11-6 victory over Canada as Ryan Stines (Panther Creek High School) led a balanced attack with two goals. Nine others scored for Team USA and Nicco Moriates (Cardinal Gibbons) posted 8 saves while Gage Turner (Audrey Kell) added on stop.

“It’s definitely a cool and unforgettable experience. I think everyone from our team will carry something home with them that they didn’t know before.”

Batton has the hero Thursday when Team USA rallied from an 8-2 deficit against Canada and prevailed, 10-9, in overtime. Batton had 6 goals in the game (8 for the tourney), and the game-winner. Team USA outscored Canada, 8-1, after halftime.

“After the first game (a 9-8 win for Team USA) I took note of what I could have done better and what they did really well,” said Batton. “The No. 1 thing I saw was there off ball movement. Coming into the second game I really tried to focus on always keeping my feet moving whether that was to cut crease, set picks or even just to v cut to make sure I was an outlet to the person that had the ball.

“Coming into the 2nd half we played 50/50 ground balls way better than we played them in the first half. We also took more control of the face offs and held the ball on offense a lot better which ultimately lead to our success in the second half.”

How did Team USA react to having to go overtime?

“We came into overtime knowing that when we got the ball they were going to slide early,” said Batton. “So we set a man up top and had him take a hard dodge down the alley which set up me to be open and score.

Registration is open for the 6 Points Sports Academy URJ Summer Camp for Jewish boys and girls who LOVE lacrosse in Greensboro, N.C.

6 Points Sports Academy is located in a 100-acre, $100 million dollar state-of-the-art athletic and camp facilities of the American Hebrew Academy. The camp opened in 2010 with 60 campers on day 1, and this past summer it welcomed 780 campers to feed their passion and assist them in reaching their goals of becoming better athletes, Jews, and humans.

At 6 Points Sports Academy, athletes from 35 different states all over North America and 7 different countries participate in a unique camping experience that offers top-level sports coaching and all the beloved traditions of Reform Jewish camping. Within its kind and nurturing community, campers form friendships for life while feeding their passion for their chosen sport – and achieve a higher quality of life as young Jewish athletes.

6 Points campers are boys and girls entering 4th – 11th grade who are looking to improve their lacrosse game, meet new friends and explore their own Jewish identity. The camp offers three separate sessions of 2 weeks each, with many campers choosing to experience 6 Points for 4 – or even 6 – weeks per summer.

The coaches are NCAA level coaches – most of whom have been with the camp since day 1. These coaches – many of which coach the USA teams for Maccabi USA – are skilled enough to challenge the top tiered athlete who comes to camp, and to teach, mentor and guide the lower skilled athletes who love their sport and love being at camp at the same time.

One of this year’s counselors is La Salle University freshman Gina Salemi, an attack from Novi (Michigan) who was a camper for many years.

This magical experience takes place on the finest camp facility in all of North America. Campers live in air-conditioned college style dorms, with either 1 or 2 roommates that they have the option of selecting prior to arrival at camp.

During each day of the two week long session, campers participate in 4 hours of intensive skill development in one chosen sport (their sports major) and 2 hours of electives. Sports majors include girls’ lacrosse, boys’ lacrosse, soccer, tennis, basketball, baseball, softball, swimming, and cheerleading / dance. This year they have added volleyball as a sports major for the first time ever during our 3rd session.

Electives include kayaking, rock climbing, gaga, rugby, ultimate frisbee, flag football, 9 square in the air, weight training, cross country, and lacrosse.

Jewish values are infused in everything we do at camp, starting with our 6 core values. Values are presented to our campers as ways to live Jewishly, as ways to live humanly, and as ways to live successfully. These values are presented by our Rabbis, faculty, and Jewish life team at camp each morning during our “Sportscenter” value presentation.

For a well-rounded camp experience, campers also participate in traditional camp activities such as Maccabiah color war, Shabbat services, and song sessions – all while living among other athletes, learning sports and life skills from professional coaches and Jewish counselors.

Anybody that signs up using LaxCon18 gets $100 off their registration.
