From Press Release

Fast or last: words to live by if you’re an elite young lacrosse talent, and a mantra brought to life at “The Ride,” a premiere summer moment for competition, training and mentorship. The invite-only experience at Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon, being held Sunday through Tuesday, brings together 100 high school boys and girls players, challenging them to push the limits cage-to-cage against top competition. Summer 2014 marks the second edition of this annual Nike Lacrosse event.nike ride

Some of the game’s best coaches and professionals provide guidance during the various sessions. Nike Lacrosse athletes, including Max Seibald, Jeremy Thompson and Kitty Cullen will be on hand to provide expert insights on training at the highest level. TV lacrosse analysts, Quint Kessenich and Courtney Connor will host the event.

Boys and girls winners will be crowned during a lacrosse-specific SPARQ (Speed, Power, Agility, Reaction, Quickness) training competition and a full-sided Championship Game. A variety of unique off-field experiential moments also provide connections to both the lifestyle and history of the sport.

The game, rooted in respect for its legacy and tradition, is moving rapidly into the future.

Staff Report

The Battle of the Hotbeds featured two finalists that come from more non-traditional lacrosse areas.

Team Carolina Elite closed an undefeated tournament Wednesday by downing Team Minnesota 2016, 6-4, for the title in the 75-team tournament at the University of Delaware.

After going 7-0 in pool play, Team Carolina – playing at Hotbeds for the first time – earned a berth in the championship with playoff close wins against Twist Black (PA), Smithtown West (NY), and Team Superstar (CT). All three wins were by three or fewer goals with victories over Twist and Team Superstar by one goal.

In the final against Team Minnesota, Team Carolina jumped to an early lead off a goal by midfielder Jake Priester (Charlotte Catholic-NC, Mercer). A pair goals by Carson Song (Charlotte Latin-NC, Brown) paced Team Carolina to a two-goal lead at the half.

Camden Porta (Marvin Ridge-NC) won the opening draw of the second half to LSM Drew Lukacs (McCallie-TN, Boston University), who scored a decisive goal to push the lead to three. After Team Minnesota cut the lead to one late in the game, Priester scored a goal to ice the victory.

Team Carolina was led by through the playoff run by strong faceoff play by Porta and clutch goaltending by Tate Boyce (McCallie School-TN, Providence) and Jack Ruch (Christ School-NC).

Team Carolina Elite top scorers were attackmen Song, Peter Pittroff and Zach Hutchko (Butler-NC, Denver) and middies Priester and Jackson Monnin (Charlotte Latin-NC, Lehigh).

Clifton Mathis (Charlotte Latin-NC, Holy Cross), John Donahue (Charlotte Country Day School-NC, Colgate), and Zach Strassner (Charlotte Catholic-NC, Delaware) led the defense and Lukacs and Griffin Stechmiller stood out at LSM while Porta did an excellent job at the FO X.

“It is a great accomplishment winning Hotbeds in our first appearance there as a club program – especially with all of the outstanding competition,” said Boyce. “We really worked hard and we are very proud of our effort as a program.

“I believe the team was so successful because of the chemistry we have established and the trust we have in one another to do what they have been asked to do on the team. We have been playing together for the summer and the team meshed so well together because we all shared a common goal of competing at a high level so we made one another better with support which really helped us grow close.”

Boyce pitched in on offense with a key goal in the first win against 2 Knights Sentry.

team Minnesota 2016 also went 7-0 in pool play and reached the finals by defeating Smithtown East, 9-3, Northport (NY), 9-5, and 2 Knights Sentry (NJ), 7-6.

Here is a ConnectLAX recruit looking to play at the next level. Asking hard questions about what you are looking for in a school and how you can contribute to a college program saves you and college coaches time in the recruiting process. Your performance on the field is only part of the recruiting equation; leading in the classroom and developing your pitch to coaches will help you stand out from the crowd.

Peyton Smith is a 2016 Face-off specialist from North Carolina who plays for Athens Drive H.S. and Tar Heel Lacrosse

Peyton Smith

Peyton Smith of Athens Drive (N.C.). and Tar Heel Lacrosse

What are you looking for in a college lacrosse program?
Smith: “The thing I look for the most in a college lacrosse program is a program that will help me grow and develop into the best lacrosse player I can be. I look for a coaching staff that will work with me and push my limits so I can be a key factor in their programs success.”

How do see yourself contributing to a college team?
Smith: “I see myself contributing to a college team not just by winning faceoffs and running off the field, but by winning faceoffs and running right to the cage and being a momentum shifter and momentum starter for my team. I am a firm believer that being a “FOGO” will not get you a successful career in college lacrosse. I have to be able to generate points and opportunities and play good defense just as well as any other midfielder.”

What is your greatest strength as a player?

Smith: “I believe my greatest strength as a player is to be coachable. I will always take coaches advice and apply it to when I play in a game I am always looking for ways to improve myself. The smallest things can make a huge difference and I am always trying to improve the small things and I believe it shows in the way I play on the field.”

Who are your biggest lacrosse influences?
Smith: “My biggest lacrosse influences are my three faceoff coaches from the Faceoff Academy who have helped me to become the player I am today and have helped me tremendously throughout the recruiting process. They are Greg Gurenlian, Chris Mattes, and Jerry Ragonese.”

What are your major goals?
Smith: “My lacrosse goals for the 2015 season is too get stronger and help my team to be successful any way possible. I am also aiming to help my team win a conference championship this year.”

What is your favorite sports team?
Smith: “My favorite professional sports team is the Carolina Panthers.”

Greg Gurenlian of FOA described Peyton as “A coach’s dream. Obsessed with being great. Physically dominating with tremendous hand speed and now has an unlimited skill set. Technically sound at the face-off X but Athletic enough to play the field. Incredibly coachable and hard working.”

Outlook for your High School team? “We have lost a couple very good senior players due to graduation, But we also have some really talented and athletic returning players. From Press Release

US Lacrosse today announced that 126 schools and civic organizations across 32 states and Washington, D.C. have been selected as 2014 Soft Lacrosse Equipment Grant recipients. Each organization will receive modified “soft” lacrosse sticks and balls, as well as instructional guides and DVDs to help support the introduction of the sport in their curriculum.US-lacrosse1

In addition, US Lacrosse has awarded 10 physical education workshop grants to school districts and community-based organizations in which US Lacrosse trainers provide in-service training utilizing soft lacrosse equipment. Each of these workshops could have teachers from as many as 30 schools in attendance, with each school also receiving a full set of soft stick equipment. This year, workshops were awarded to school districts and organizations in Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Washington.

“Soft stick lacrosse is a wonderful way to introduce the sport of lacrosse to new youth players, and we’re pleased to be able to provide equipment and resources to schools and local organizations nationwide to help expose the game to new participants,” said Meghan Mulford, programs manager at US Lacrosse. “The continued support of our equipment contributor for this program, STX, enables us to keep extending the program to more and more communities each year.”

The objective of the P.E. and Soft Stick Equipment Grant Program is to initiate, expand, or enhance participation in the sport by enabling teachers and recreational program leaders to introduce lacrosse in the classroom and other similar venues. Each equipment grant includes 30 soft lacrosse sticks, 30 soft lacrosse balls, one copy of the US Lacrosse P.E. Curriculum Guide and Reproducible packet and a copy of an instructional DVD produced by US Lacrosse.

Applicants also have the option to request in-service style training from US Lacrosse for educators and other lacrosse stakeholders who want to learn how to introduce and safely teach the sport of lacrosse to their students. All workshop participants are awarded a full set of equipment for their school or organization.

Charlotte Catholic High School (NC) 2015 defenseman-LSM Daniel Crotty has made a commitment to play Division III lacrosse at Stevens Institute of Technology.

Daniel Crotty ledger:

Daniel Crotty

Daniel Crotty

High School: Charlotte Catholic High School, North Carolina

Graduation Year: 2015

Position: Defense/LSM

College Choice: Stevens Institute of Technology

Club Affiliation: Team Carolina

Lacrosse Honors: Summer 2013; Southern Select All-Star, MVP Lax Camp All-Star, Blue Chip 225 Elite Division All-Star, Lehigh Valley Showcase All-Star, Brine National High School All-American

Fall 2013; Southeastern Showcase All-Star

Spring 2014; North Carolina 4A Lacrosse State Champions

Summer 2014; FLG in 3D All-Star, Battle of the Hotbeds All-Star

Other; Named to Class of 2015 Players to Watch; Southeast list by Studentsports.com

What will you major in/study? Mathematics or Engineering

Why did you choose Stevens? “I chose Stevens Institute of Technology because it is a school of strong academics and athletics. I will be set up for success when I graduate and I will also get the chance to play some great lacrosse while I earn my degree. Also when I stepped on campus I fell in love with it. With the most amazing view of New York City who wouldn’t want to go there. It also has a true college campus feel but is also in a big city and just across the Hudson River from the countries largest city which is exactly what I was looking for.”

Thoughts on last season/outlook for next season? “I think we will be just as good next season as we were last season. Though we only have 1 returning starter on defense and lost Connor Poole at attack, the guys we have filling those spots could have started at any other school in the state last year. I think we’ll still be the same run and gun team we were last year and have a shot at States again.”

Thank You: “I’d like to thank my parents first and foremost for always supporting me and taking me to all my tournaments and camps. I’d like to thank Coach Bo Turner, Coach Chris Diamond for helping through this process. I’d also like to give a huge thank you to Coach Dan MacMahon for all he has done for me through out my whole lacrosse career, he’s helped me develop as a person and player since I was little. I’d also like to thank all the guys I’ve played with a long the way, I wouldn’t be here without them.”

Other schools considered: Western New England University, York College of PA, Wooster

Registration remains open for the C2C Spotlight Top Prospect Camps in Dallas, Texas, on Oct. 18-19.C2C Spotlight

Now in their third year, the C2C Spotlight Top Prospect Camps provide unique opportunities for high school student-athletes to learn from and be seen by top college coaches. Spotlight will be staffed by 30 college coaches from some of the finest academic institutions and lacrosse programs in the country.

Dates: October 18-19, 2014
Venue: MoneyGram Soccer Park at Elm Fork, 2100 Walnut Hill Lane, Dallas, Texas 75229
Boys’ Registration: Click here.
Girls’ Registration: Click here.

C2C founder and event director John Marano said the event was created three years ago to provide an opportunity for players from Texas to get seen by college coaches without having to travel to the East Coast.

“Our kids do six trips a year for a combined 1,500 hours so we asked, ‘How can we do it where we can get them pretty good exposure and bring coaches here?'” he said. “That’s how it started.”

Marano said each boys’ division will have 68 players (four teams) so that all players can get plenty of time on the field. Currently, the 2018 boys’ division is filled, but there are some openings in the other boys’ and girls’ divisions.

“We wanted to keep it small and get our kids a ton of exposure,” Marano said. “We are purposely keeping the teams really small. We will have four attackmen, six middies, five defensemen and two goalies per boys’ team. We wanted the kids on the field in front of coaches.”

Marano said there will be a good showing of C2C players and others from Texas, but also noted that many are coming from Western states and Southern states where C2C has more teams.

“What made this year special for me was when Scott Hochstadt said he’d bring in 50 kids from the West Coast Starz, so we’ll have players from California, Nevada and oregon,” Marano said. “We also have 50 of our boys from Virginia and North Carolina where we have C2C teams and our friends at No Excuse Tennessee are being five to 10 players.

“This is no longer a Texas-only event. It’s developing into a Southwest event.”
