Staff Report

Memphis University School (TN) 2017 attack Cade Klawinski said competing in the C2C Spotlight Saturday and Sunday in Dallas was a great event for the growing South and Southwest areas of lacrosse.

“It was very convenient having an event with such great exposure that I could easily drive to,” said Klawinski, who earned a spot on the 2016-17 All-Star Team (see full teams below). “I really was impressed by the quality of college programs represented there.

“As lacrosse continues to develop and grow more in the south I believe events like this become increasingly beneficial to both the coaches doing the recruiting and those trying to be recruited.”

More than 200 boys and 50 girls competed Saturday and Sunday in the 3rd annual Spotlight event, which drew 30 men’s and women’s college coaches and also featured clinics by college coaches.

“Overall, I was pleased with how I played,” said Klawinski. “I got unlucky with six pipes in the first three games, but I felt I performed well enough in other aspects to get myself into the All-Star game where I felt I played my best game of the entire camp.”

Klawinski, who plays club for No-Excuse, said he can only improve his game from the event.

C2C Spotlight 2018-19 All-Stars

C2C Spotlight 2018-19 All-Stars

“The biggest thing I learned about my game was that I needed to make the most of the opportunity of having the ball in my stick,” he said. “I need to better use my quickness and athleticism to better assert myself and apply pressure on the defenders.”

And my club teams are c2c atlanta. c2c national and and also c2c regional

The Westminsters Schools (Atlanta, GA) 2018 goalie Jack Van Slyke made the 2018-19 All-Star Team. “I thought I performed very well especially in the All-Star game,” he said.

Van Slyke, who plays club for C2C Atlanta, c2C National and C2C Regional, also was pleased to play in a showcase close to home.

“It was good to see a good recruiting event somewhat close to home with a large amount of coaches in attendance,” he said. “It’s also good to see more states offering good recruiting camps as opposed (to just in) the Mid-Atlantic.”

RADNOR, Pa. – They come from everywhere – California, North Carolina, Indiana, Texas, Long Island and even Iowa. But members of the Long Island Sting had no trouble finding success Sunday at the Quaker Fall LaxFest.

The Sting went 3-0 during the 30-team recruiting event at Radnor High that drew more than 100 college coaches and an impressive collection on talent, mostly focused on the East Coast and the Mid-Atlantic region.

Tommy Riley, 2016 DEF, Loyola, CA

Tommy Riley, 2016 DEF, Loyola, CA

The Sting, however, draw players from all around the country. One of them, 2016 defenseman Tommy Riley of Loyola High (CA) in Los Angeles said his teammates often have played together for a year or two and, like any other team, was looking to win, play together and impress college coaches.

“I have played with these guys in the summer and I am getting to know their tendencies and learning to communicate well,” said Riley.

“The competition is at a high level. The speed is phenomenal; the passing, the footwork lacrosse and the high IQ. Everyone is on the same page, getting the ball upfield and knowing what to do in the correct situations.”

Riley said the coaches could easily be spotted, but the focus was on the high competition.

“It’s great to be in front of a lot of great coaches here,” he said. “The level of play only adds on to the intensity. At the end of the day, we are just giving it our all.”

Riley said the level of play in the East is different than the West.

“I like that the play requires a lot more lacrosse IQ as opposed to California where there is a lot of pure athleticism,” he said. “I will be able to hone my skills and that helps you get to the next level.”

Other questions:

What did you learn about your game today that you can take into the rest of the Fall and the Spring season?
Riley:
“I am trying to understand the little nuances of the game; how to move through the field, when to throw checks, when to run and not to run it and and when to pass,” he said. “I want to understand the level of competition and how people play at that level.”

What type of college are you looking for?
Riley:
“I really want to go to a strong academic college,” he said. “Academics come first and I want one that can take me far in life. Of course, it should have a strong lacrosse program.”

Other members of the Sting answered these questions:

Devin Burdo, 2017 G,Cold Spring Harbor

Devin Burdo, 2017 G, Cold Spring Harbor, NY

Devin Burdo, 2017 G, Cold Spring Harbor, NY

What goals did you have coming in and how did your team mesh?
Burdo:
“I started with the Sting last December and I had a great summer getting to know lot of guys. We have great chemistry and we like playing together. It’s our first fall event and it’s great to see my friends again.”

How has the competition been?
Burdo:
“The competition is pretty good. It’s great getting back into it. Since the conditions are cold it’s not the best for a goalie. Shots hurt and the slippery ground makes for tough shots. Sometimes you just have to do what you have to do.”

What did you learn about your game today that you can take into the rest of the Fall and the Spring season?
Burdo:
“I think you have to do the things you can control. A lot of things have happened today; sometimes there are shots I can save and should save and don’t. You have to bounce back and do things the best you can.”

What type of college are you looking for?
Burdo:
“I am looking for the best college academically. Academics are the most important thing. I would like (to go) to a good lacrosse school with a nice team where I can make friends and be successful after college.”

Hunter Sheridan, 2017 MF, Charlotte Latin, NC

Hunter Sheridan, 2017 MF, Charlotte Latin, NC

Hunter Sheridan, 2017 MF, Charlotte Latin, NC

What goals did you have coming in and how did your team mesh?
Sheridan:
“The competition was really good. You have to have a high IQ to play here. Everybody has good stick skills. It’s my first tournament with (the Sting). They are all great guys who have meshed well. You sort of figure out each other’s strengths.

What did you learn about your game today that you can take into the rest of the Fall and the Spring season?
Sheridan:
“I am just learning how to play with new players and new coaches, and learning where to be at all times while developing a high IQ.”

What type of college are you looking for?
Sheridan:
“I want a school that will push me to my extremes and a coach that will push me at all times.”

How does your size (6-4, 215) help you?
Sheridan:
“I just try to break down and sit down and play defense where they can’t get a shot off. My size helps on defense and offense because I can use my body.

How does the South compare to the level of play in the Mid-Atlantic?
Sheridan:
“I don’t think the level is too much higher here; the IQ is higher, but the South has gotten a lot better.”

Luke Dennen, 2017 MF, Cathedral, IN

Luke Dennen, 2017 MF, Cathedral, IN

Luke Dennen, 2017 MF, Cathedral, IN

What goals did you have coming in and how did your team mesh?
Dennen:
“I played with these guys last summer and the fall before, so I have played with a bunch of them. Coach (Ken) Miller always bring in some new guys and they are always good. We have meshed together pretty well.”

What did you learn about your game today that you can take into the rest of the Fall and the Spring season?
Dennen:
“I think the players around me helped me figure out things about myself and the coaches have helped me figure it out.”

What type of college are you looking for?
Dennen:
“I am looking for a high academic school with a coach willing to push players as hard as possible.”

Griffin Thomas, 2017 LSM, Deerfield Academy, CT; of Des Moines, IA

Griffin Thomas, 2016 DEF, Deerfield Ac. CT,, of Des Moines, IA

Griffin Thomas, 2016 DEF, Deerfield Ac. CT,, of Des Moines, IA

What goals did you have coming in and how did your team mesh?
Thomas:
“Individually, I just came to show I didn’t lose anything over the summer. I built myself up physically through football and wrestling and other sports and I did stickwork and positioning throughout the fall. I wanted to show I can play at the next level and wanted to show I am one of the best kids out here. I know these guys – I know how they play. They are great players and great to be around

What type of college are you looking for?
Thomas:
“Lacrosse-wise. I am looking for a college with a coach that is very intense in practice, one that is not afraid to yell but still loves the kids like our coach Miller. And I want a great academic school.”

What did you learn about your game today that you can take into the rest of the Fall and the Spring season?
Thomas:
“What I really learned today is playing in tough conditions – playing in conditions I am not used to playing in and learning how to build up your confidence and grit through that. I learned that if you do slip, get back up and strip the ball and get it down the field.”

Has Thomas – who moved to Iowa six months ago from Connecticut – found others that play lacrosse in his new home?
Thomas:
“I am from Connecticut, but I have been living in Iowa for about six months. There are about five public schools near me and not a single one has lacrosse. I had to ship one (a player) in. They never heard of it. There is a high school that has a couple players that trek about 50 miles.”

About the Face-Off Factory:

Founded in 2011, the Face-Off Factory has consulted with some of the top face-off coaches and players in the country. Our goal then and now was to develop a top notch face-off training program. We have used small group and private training sessions to test our methods with players of all levels and abilities. This has allowed us to develop the most comprehensive face-off training program in lacrosse. Our willingness to teach players every aspect of the position is what separates the Face-Off Factory from other programs. Our goal is to not only create a dominant draw man, but a quarterback in the middle of the “X.” By combining intense instruction and drilling with high level competition, we have an incredible program for players to learn and grow. The competition has generated awesome recruiting exposure and resulted in players being recruited to play at the next level.

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – Zach Friedland said his West Coast Starz National Green 2018 squad may come from all regions west, but the squad has already become close.

“I thought we had a connection and great chemistry,” said the Torrey Pines (CA) attackman-midfielder after his team finished a 6-0 weekend at the Adrenaline Invitational at Plymouth Whitemarsh High. “We all like each other and we’re closely intertwined.

“It’s interesting. It would seem like we’re not able to play much together. But whenever we see each other at tournaments we hang out together and from doing these, we actually have all played together once or twice before before. It’s fun playing with one another.”

The Starz were one of 44 teams, of all classes, that competed before more than 100 coaches Saturday and Sunday.

2018 ATT/MF Zach Friedland, WC Starz green

2018 ATT/MF Zach Friedland, WC Starz Green/Torrey Pines, CA

“There’s a lot of great competition,” Friedland. “I am so excited and so happy our team did so well and performed so well on the East Coast with all these top teams.”

Friedland said he is not stressing about the college recruiting scene

“I am thinking about it a little bit. it’s starting to happen, but it’s sort of in the beginning for me. I have had a lot of contact with coaches and I think a lot (of others) are, too, but I am hearing to keep my options open, which sounds good to me. Whatever comes to me, I can decide after I get all my options.

“When we really play together and have fun and stay positive, it all works. If don’t worry about recruiting and just have fun, it will come to you.”

Others that excelled

McCabe Watson, 2018 ATT/MF, LB3, Ravenscroft, N.C.

How was the competition and what did you do to adjust to the level?
Watson:
“The competition was great and everybody played well. From all across the nation there’s a ton of talent and some different playing styles. You have to adjust defensively from teams up North to teams on the West Coast.”

2018 ATT/MF McCabe Watson, Ravenscroft, NC

2018 ATT/MF McCabe Watson, LB3/Ravenscroft, NC

Has your team played together much and how did the players adjust?
Watson:
“No we haven’t (played together much). There’s a couple Atlanta kids that played together a while. There are some kids from California and some from down South, like me, and other from Philly. We had to adjust to each other and play as a team.”

What type of college are you looking for?
Watson:
“I would like to go to one of bigger D1 schools or maybe the naval Academy. It starts with school. You have to have a growth mindset and do your work and when you get to the lacrosse field you always have to be working if you want to play at the top level. I just think everybody needs to play calm and not get nervous; play like you practice and always work hard and always know someone is watching you

Frankie Dillon, 2017 Goalie, NJ Riot, Pingry School, N.J.

2017 G Frankie Dillon, NJ Riot, Pingry School, NJ

2017 G Frankie Dillon, NJ Riot, Pingry School, NJ

You played every minute of the four wins in four games on Saturday. How did you handle the playing load?
Dillon:
“I managed pretty well; it was fun playing the whole game. Sometimes in the second half it got a little tough, but that was more mentally than physically taxing. My voice got horse after the first game.”

What skills do you have to offer a college program?
Dillon:
“I am really good at clearing. I think I am an athletic goalie, which is hard to find. I can take it, and run it to midfield. I am not one of those guys to just go and shoot. I am very good on clears and very good low. If you shoot on the ground, most of time I am going to get. I am very vocal and not afraid to yell at people and kick them on the butt, but I always say, ‘Good job’ and I am always positive.”

What type of college are you looking for?
Dillon:
“Some place definitely with good academics. In the end it’s not about lacrosse, it’s about getting into the right school for you.

Why has your team enjoyed success?
Dillon:
“It’s a lot of fun to play on the Riot and great how we stay together all four years. We create team chemistry and that helps a lot.”

Dylan Wolf, 2017 Midfielder, Rock 2017, Fallston, MD (helped HS team will state title as a freshman starter)

2017 ATT Dylan Wolf, Rock, Fallston, MD

2017 ATT Dylan Wolf, Rock, Fallston, MD

How have you adapted to the level of play in the tournament?
Wolf:
“It’s been challenging trying to become a team since it’s my first year with the program and it’s our first tournament. That will come as we get our offense together and get more familiar with each player’s strengths.”

What do you have to offer a college program?
Wolf:
“I just play my hardest and give everything I have got. If you give everything you’ve got, coaches see you and your coaches are proud of you. I go 100 percent on groundballs and I hustle.”

What type of college are you looking for?
Wolf:
“I haven’t really thought about it. I want a good environment, good academics and a school that will help me in the future. I want to take my time and I don’t want to commit early; I want to find a school that suits me.”

Bobby McClure, 2016 ATT, HEADstrong LC, Haverford High, PA

2016 ATT Bobby McClure, HEADstrong LC, Haverford High, PA

2016 ATT Bobby McClure, HEADstrong LC, Haverford High, PA

What has the competition been?
McClure:
It’s been really competitive. It’s helped to see kids from California and how they play. We’ve done alright and should have done better. But playing these kind of teams is different.”

Wat type of college are you looking for?
McClure:
“I was looking to go D3; definitely a big college with good lacrosse and good academics and somewhere in the field of sports medicine.”

What do you have to offer a college program?
McClure:
“I would say my vision from behind the net and ability to pick apart a defense.”

What can you take from this tourney?
McClure:
“To be a little smarter with skip passes and don’t be lackadaisical and pick the right ones. You can make a great play or you could mess up a play and throw it away.”

“I was just trying to stay calm and then I won the first two against (Isaac Avon of Damascus, MD) and thought it was over,” said Smith, of Athens Drive (N.C.) and Tar Heel Lacrosse. ‘They said, ‘No, no, you have to win one more.'”

That he did, topping Avon (Lax Factory), unofficially, 3-1.

“I was mentally and physically prepared,” said Smith, a Marist commit. “I tried to avoid the pressure. The competition was amazing. There were multiple D1 commits and kids from all over the country.”

Smith – who has been training with Faceoff Academy for a year – also enjoyed the training he received Saturday in the first day of the event.

“I wanted to adapt my style to the new college rules to I am ready to play as a freshman,” he said. “Definitely, I have gotten great help from Greg (Gurenlian), Chris (Mattes) and Jerry (Ragonese) of the Faceoff Academy. They’ve really helped me through the recruiting process and stuck with me.”

From Press Release

US Lacrosse announced that 94 teams across 33 states nationwide have been awarded development grants through the 2014 First Stick Program. Girls’ programs received 51 grant awards and boys’ programs were awarded 43 grants.US-lacrosse11

This national US Lacrosse initiative is designed to deliver comprehensive resources, including equipment, US Lacrosse membership and coaches training, to awarded organizations. The program is geared for new and developing youth and high school lacrosse teams nationwide.

“We congratulate each of these recipients because they emerged from a very competitive application process as excellent candidates for the First Stick awards,” said Wendell Lee, director of programs at US Lacrosse. “The popularity of the First Stick Program and the growth of our sport in new and sometimes remote locations produced an applicant pool of over 230 teams in 2014. Although most see the equipment as the main benefit, US Lacrosse is also committed to providing the information, knowledge, and training that are at the heart of every sustainable program.”

First Stick Program grant recipients enter a two-year partnership with US Lacrosse, during which time the national organization will help to develop a self-sustaining lacrosse program that operates by US Lacrosse’s national standards and best practices. One of the program’s primary goals is to help break down the barriers to participation by providing free and/or discounted resources to new teams.

Applicant groups were required to demonstrate a financial need and verify their status as a community based youth team or organization, or an elementary, middle or high school team in order to be considered.

The First Stick Program is a US Lacrosse initiative supported by many of the nation’s leading manufacturers, distributors and retailers of lacrosse equipment. To see the full list of supporters, or to read more about the program, please visit uslacrosse.org/FirstStick.

BROOMALL, Pa. – The USBoxLa Northeast Regional Qualifiers will be held Dec. 28-29 at Bucksmont Sportscenter in Hatfield (PA) and feature at least 20 teams in four divisions: 2020, 2019, Junior Varsity, and Varsity Elite.

One of the kickoff events for the tourney was held last Monday and Tuesday Marple Sports Arena in Broomall when USBoxLa coach Matt Brown ran two clinics, one for high school players and another for youth players.

Squads from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Ohio And North Carolina are can still register today for several more days by contacting Steven Holmes at Sholmes@playfusionlax.com. The top three finishers in each division will advance to the Nationals Aug. 1-2 next summer.

Brown, a USBoxla founder and chief instructor and also an assistant coach at the University of Denver, also gave a clinic at Penn and youth clinics in Baltimore last week. He was asked why box lacrosse was gaining so much interest and attention.

“It’s important because it‘s really the movement toward the future of the sport – especially at the youth level,” he said. “It’s of my opinion that all youth lacrosse players should be playing some sort of indoor lacrosse before they step on the field.

“You get a lot more touches, and you get a lot more activity – it’s a great workout. You touch the ball 100 times during the course of the game.”

Brown also explained the popular and growing belief that box skills make a better player on the field.

“The two things that come to mind when I talk about box lacrosse is, No. 1, obviously, the stick skills,” he said. “From catching – which I believe is the most important skill in lacrosse – to finishing, making cuts in the middle and to picking up groundballs rather than taking the easy way out by taking the man. No. 2, is quick decision making. It’s mental skills … making quick decisions on the fly and ultimately reading and reacting. You have a lot of opportunities to make decisions here in the rink.”

Fusion co-founder Steven Holmes answered these questions about the clinics and the upcoming tournament.

What new skills, ideas did your players learn from the USBoxLa clinics?
Holmes:
“Coach Brown like any elite coach, has a talent for getting his lessons across to developing players in a way that they can easily process and understand. Based on his credentials alone he garnered the full attention of our players, who were dialed in and focused from the start. Our coaching staff was very impressed with Coach Browns practice plan and the amount of quality touches the kids got. Coach Brown was extremely passionate about having things done the correct way and was a very active demonstrator. His tips on finishing techniques and how to properly set, and roll off picks, were a valuable addition to our curriculum at Fusion.”

Can you explain your association with USBoxLa?
Holmes:
“We are associated with US box Lacrosse as the charter members of Pennsylvania for a few key reasons. First is the solid foundation based on a quality rulebook and referee certification. We know that if we are playing at a USBoxla certified event that the refereeing is going to be great, the game will be safe, and the rulebook will be consistent with our training and how we believe the game should be played.

“Secondly the network of USBoxla charter members is phenomenal. We know that when we play another charter team, that they have been coached by the best. Every single charter member has a director who has played professional box lacrosse, and their teams reflect this great coaching. The overall support the network provides, means we can get our kids exposure to other phenomenal box coaches they may not otherwise receive (like Matt Brown), as well as participation in USBoxLa sanctioned tournaments. The quality of USBoxLa run tournaments are first class and unmatched for box lacrosse. Our Northeast regional will continue that tradition of the highest quality of tournaments.”

How many teams are coming to the USBoxLa Regional Qualifier and are there still spots available?
Holmes:
“Right now we have over 20 teams competing in four divisions and there are spots still available. This will be a phenomenal tournament including some of the best teams in the region for box or field. Bucksmont Sports Center will provide an ideal environment for playing and viewing. Certified referees will be flying in from California to work the event.

“The format will be enjoyable for coaches and teams because it will not be rushed like other tournaments. Timeouts and halftimes will be more substantial than most other elite tournaments so adjustments and game plans can be implemented. This tournament covers both Sunday and Monday with Championship and consolation games. Winners in each bracket will earn passage to Nationals in California next August.”

How do you see the skills learned from box as important to US players as the influx of Canadians and the box game continues to grow for college hopefuls?
Holmes:
“The box game is a great game in its own right. However it is most useful today in Philly as a training tool for players in order to maximize their skills and potential outdoors.

“At the youngest levels the box game helps players learn the proper fundamentals quicker, while receiving more repetitions. As kids get older they grow more confident catching in tight spaces and feeding in tight spaces. The more constant contact in the box games allows players to feel more comfortable and confident when they are being pressured. Another important note, is that the box game moves so fast that players make quicker decisions making them more dynamic players both inside and out.”
